Reasons the USMNT cannot contest Folarin Balogun’s red card

Reasons the USMNT cannot contest Folarin Balogun’s red card

USA Advances to the Round of 16 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The United States has secured a place in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following their 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday night. However, it was quite a contrasting performance. At times, the U.S. was inventive and threatening in their attacks, while there were moments when they struggled on the field.

So, what caused this inconsistency? The turning point was a red card shown to Folarin Balogun in the 64th minute.

Balogun’s early game was a bit shaky, but he managed to score, marking his third goal of the tournament just before halftime. There was a close call with another chance when his shot struck the crossbar.

This particular goal underscored the evolution of the U.S. men’s national team, starting with an impressive early touch from defender Tim Ream, followed by creative midfield play from Tyler Adams, a lovely assist from Malik Tillman, and a solid finish by Balogun to put the Americans ahead.

This is definitely not the USMNT we used to know.

Yet, in the second half, Balogun collided awkwardly with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s defender Tarik Muharemovic, leading to both players hitting the ground, with the defender reaching for his ankle.

The decision made by referee Rafael Klaus will spark discussions for a while, especially after VAR suggested reviewing the incident. Balogun received a red card, forcing the U.S. to play with just ten men for the remainder of the match.

Remarkably, the determination of the remaining players shone through. Even with a player down, the U.S. didn’t appear particularly threatened, and Tillman extended their lead with a well-taken free kick in the 82nd minute.

Now, with the Round of 16 match against Belgium approaching, there’s considerable curiosity about whether Balogun will be able to challenge his red card and one-match suspension.

Can the U.S. Appeal Balogun’s Red Card?

According to FIFA regulations, which are quite extensive, protests cannot be made against referees’ decisions concerning facts of the game. Article 9.6 states that such decisions are final and not open to appeal unless specified otherwise in the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

Moreover, should a player be sent off due to a direct or indirect red card, they are automatically suspended from the following match. Article 66-4 further confirms that those ejected will face automatic suspension from the next game, with potential for additional penalties.

Consequently, Balogun’s red card and the associated suspension cannot be appealed.

However, if FIFA decides to impose further sanctions after reviewing the incident, those could be contested. For instance, during group play, a player was given an additional suspension after a review prompted by a serious injury caused to an opposing player.

This five-match ban can be appealed, yet the original red card and its corresponding suspension cannot.

Thus, should FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee find Balogun’s challenge warranted further punishment, an appeal might be possible. According to Mark Clattenburg, a former FIFA referee, these situations are taken seriously. He mentioned, “If they deem this a dangerous challenge, they might upgrade it.” However, he also expressed doubt, suggesting it was likely an accident deserving of a red card but not an upgrade.

At this point, it seems the USMNT will have to proceed without Balogun in their upcoming Round of 16 clash against Belgium.
