British Soccer Fans Celebrate Baseball in Atlanta
Some soccer enthusiasts from Britain just can’t get enough of the sport after witnessing an exciting comeback against the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Wednesday.
In the afternoon, a bunch of these fans moved on to the Braves vs. Cardinals game, fired up by Harry Kane’s remarkable performance in Atlanta. His efforts had helped the Three Lions advance to the Round of 16 in the World Cup.
Fans gathered in the left-center field area, cheering on Braves center fielder Michael Harris. They sang various tunes, including “Walking Through Harris’ Wonderland” and another catchy one about Harris and baseball.
A tweet captured the moment, describing how England fans had randomly chosen Harris as their favorite player during the game—a bit of an odd twist, but kind of heartwarming, don’t you think?
Harris, appreciative of the support, took a moment to toss the ball to the fans as the inning began.
One British fan, Nige, shared his thoughts with Braves TV reporter Wiley Ballard, saying, “This is my first baseball experience. I didn’t really know what to expect. We’re trying to infuse a bit of British flair into a sport that feels different. But it’s nice to see something new. I really love the atmosphere here.” It’s kind of refreshing to hear that enthusiasm.
The Braves wrapped up the game with a 5-1 victory, and Harris contributed one hit and one RBI over four at-bats. This win improved the team’s record to 50-34.
Currently, they’re trailing by 2.5 games in the National League East and have a matchup against the Phillies tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Harris, age 25, entered 2022 with an impressive batting average of .297/.339/.514, alongside 19 home runs and 64 RBIs, which earned him the National League Rookie of the Year title. This season, he’s batting .293 with an .817 OPS, adding 14 home runs and 44 RBIs in 78 games.
Looking ahead, England will be gearing up for a tough match against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca this Sunday. It should be interesting to see how they fare!
