Israel marks a solemn milestone: 1,000 days since the October 7 Hamas attack

Commemoration of a Tragic Anniversary

On October 7, 2023, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the October Council of Grassroots Organizations held a somber remembrance to mark the 1,000th day since the Hamas-led terrorist attack on southern Israel, which led to over 1,200 deaths and hundreds of hostages being taken.

Families and community members participated in vigils, marches, and protests nationwide, organized by the October Council, which consists of affected families, survivors, and former hostages.

The council strongly criticized the Israeli government for not preventing the Hamas invasion and failing to establish a national commission of inquiry. They commenced their ceremony at 6:29 a.m., precisely when the assault occurred 1,000 days prior.

A moment of silence was observed at 10 a.m. This was followed by a presentation at 11 a.m. featuring 1,000 items belonging to those who were either killed or kidnapped on that fateful day.

The ministry stated, “One thousand days ago at 6:29 a.m., Hamas terrorists invaded southern Israel, slaughtering more than 1,200 people and abducting hundreds to Gaza. They thought they could destroy Israel. They were wrong. Israelis have rebuilt communities, replanted fields, reopened schools, started new businesses, revived tourism, performed advanced science, treated patients, created works of art, celebrated weddings and brought life back. Israel will meet hatred with resilience, destruction with rebuilding, fear with life, and despite all odds, Israel will rise.”

On Thursday, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee also encouraged the public to remember the victims of this tragic event. He remarked, “1,000 days ago, the monster of Hamas burst into Israel from Gaza and slaughtered 1,200 men, women, and children. It took 251 hostages and slaughtered them without mercy. We must never forget the victims and must continue to ask, ‘How did this happen?’

Additionally, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) convened a summit on Monday to observe 1,000 days of ongoing conflict following the October 7 massacre. IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir referred to the invasion as “an attack on the very existence of the Jewish people.” The meeting began with a moment of silence for the 964 soldiers who lost their lives that day, including a poignant recording of Colonel Asaf Hamami, who died shortly after the attack began.

Zamir remarked that the painful memory “challenges us to continue to change, to draw and absorb lessons from the regional learning competition.”

On that tragic day, around 6,000 armed Palestinian terrorists invaded southern Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 fatalities, countless injuries, and 251 hostages taken.
