Jaylen Brown reassures tearful 6-year-old superfan following trade

Jaylen Brown’s Impact on Young Fans

Although Jaylen Brown is no longer with the Celtics, his influence on the team’s fans remains evident.

Shortly after being traded to the 76ers on Wednesday, Brown took a moment to comfort young supporters who were feeling heartbroken over the news.

In response to a video featuring a 6-year-old boy named Gio, who was visibly upset about his favorite player leaving, Brown commented, “It’s okay, brother,” accompanied by a heart emoji. “We’ve always been friends.”

Gio, wearing a brown No. 7 jersey, expressed his gratitude for Brown through tears, saying, “I love you so much. You mean so much to me. You’re my favorite player in the entire NBA.”

He also held up a heartfelt letter asking, “I love you, JB. Please come back someday.” Such emotion from a young child was something even his mother hadn’t expected to witness.

Her post reflected her feelings, noting, “I think my 6-year-old son just experienced his first heartbreak. His favorite player being traded has him in tears.”

Gio has met Brown on two occasions at school, and his mother views the former Celtic as a positive role model. “He’s always there for the kids, very humble,” Gio’s mother, Gigi Jean, shared.

She added, “I don’t think I’ll find another athlete as dedicated to the community, so humble and well-educated. My heart goes out to my baby; he’s really sad.”

After a decade in Boston, the Celtics traded Brown for Paul George, along with two first-round and two second-round picks.

Gio’s sadness is quite relatable given how Brown has excelled during his time with the Celtics, averaging 20 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He made five All-Star teams, even securing the 2024 NBA Finals MVP.

George, the player brought in as Brown’s replacement, is a likely future Hall of Famer but is nearing retirement. If he meets expectations, perhaps Gio will transition into a fan of George instead.
