Zach Werenski’s Future with the Blue Jackets Unclear
The situation regarding Zach Werenski and the Columbus Blue Jackets has taken a new twist.
Columbus general manager Don Waddell issued a statement Wednesday to address the ongoing trade talks, confirming that Werenski will stay in Columbus despite reports from Tuesday indicating he had blocked a trade.
The trade rumors around Werenski, a Norris Trophy winner, have intensified recently, with speculation linking him to teams like the Lightning and Maple Leafs. However, NHL insider Elliott Friedman reported a verbal agreement between Columbus and Dallas, potentially sending Werenski to the Stars along with Thomas Hurley.
Nevertheless, it’s been mentioned that Werenski used his no-move clause to prevent the trade from happening.
Waddell explained the communication between the two parties, saying, “During that discussion, I mentioned we were looking at opportunities to move him, and if an agreement came about, I would bring it to him.” He added that after discussions with his family, Werenski conveyed his desire to remain in Columbus, emphasizing his commitment to the organization and aspiration to see the team succeed again.
Werenski himself stated that he felt the situation was somewhat exaggerated. “I want to win and do it in Columbus… It’s been my home for the past ten years, and I’ve always taken pride in being a Blue Jacket,” he remarked. He also noted his appreciation for his teammates and coaches, expressing eagerness to help the team return to playoff contention.
Last season, Werenski closed out with impressive stats, racking up 81 points, including 59 assists and 22 goals. He became the 10th defenseman ever in the NHL to lead his team in scoring for two consecutive seasons, equaling Artemi Panarin’s record for the franchise’s most assists in a single season.
Additionally, he played a crucial role in the 2026 Winter Olympics, assisting on Jack Hughes’ gold medal-winning goal.
For the moment, it seems that Werenski will continue to don the Blue Jackets jersey, although with Boone Jenner’s recent move to the Capitals, the team has lost its captain.
