Religious Organizations Promote Family Connections for Independence Day

As the nation gears up for its 250th anniversary, faith-based groups are encouraging parents to deepen their connections with their children during Independence Day celebrations. Ahead of the Fourth of July, Communio, an organization dedicated to strengthening family ties, has unveiled a “Great American Family Fun Kit.” This kit contains activity ideas, recipes for patriotic treats, and prayers for the nation. Activities range from trying out 18th-century slang to crafting flags and participating in a Fourth of July-themed scavenger hunt.

JP de Gance, founder and president of Communio, emphasized the significance of Independence Day, likening its importance to Thanksgiving, which he described as the nation’s most crucial family holiday.

LDS Church Acknowledges Community Service Efforts

Communio, collaborating with over 17,000 churches nationwide, aims to foster family connections by promoting neighborhood gatherings, block parties, and community-building activities on Independence Day. De Gance remarked, “The family is the most basic building block of society.” He believes in the strong link between resilient families and robust communities.

De Gance mentioned that recent polling indicates a decline in patriotic feelings among many Americans. The organization’s goal is to rekindle love for the country and its founding principles on a local level—it’s all about grassroots engagement.

Encouraging Quality Family Time

While the activities in the kit celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, de Gance pointed out that a broader aim is to encourage families to spend quality time together, stepping away from screens. He noted that simple activities can facilitate meaningful connections between parents and children.

Research shows that regular communication between parents and children leads to warmer relationships. De Gance stated that children with strong parental relationships tend to fare better in life and view faith as an important aspect.

This kit seems targeted at families with young kids but also features activities that can engage teenagers. De Gance suggested using treasure hunts to unite children of varying ages, noting how important family time can be, especially given rising reports of loneliness among U.S. teens.

He reflected, “Honestly, the frequency with which kids report spending time with their families isn’t all that high… When they do, they’re more likely to say they have good relationships with their parents and feel less lonely.”

Looking Ahead

As de Gance envisions America’s future, he expressed hope for a revival of healthy marriages and family life across the country. He wants young people to find meaning in enduring values, such as faith, marriage, and family. “The path to ensuring we celebrate America 300, America 350, and America 400 is through our whole family,” he concluded.
