Cole Hauser’s Montana Connection Beyond “Yellowstone”
Cole Hauser shared that his connection to Montana goes further than just his role in the “Yellowstone” series. While the show has indeed attracted numerous viewers to the state, his family has roots there that date back almost 140 years. “Montana, my family has lived there since 1886, so the Hauser legacy there is huge,” he remarked. His great-great-grandfather, Samuel T. Hauser, served as the seventh governor of Montana and played a key role in the state’s establishment. For Hauser, filming in Montana was like coming home, with locations already steeped in his family’s history.
As “Yellowstone” expands into Texas with the upcoming “Dutton Ranch,” industry experts believe this could lead to a similar tourism surge. Adam Duckworth, president of a travel company, noted a noticeable increase in interest in visiting filming locations of popular shows and movies, coining it as “set jetting.” According to him, few shows have influenced travel trends as much as “Yellowstone,” which has inspired fans to witness the stunning scenery and maybe even visit places like Yellowstone National Park itself.
“Yellowstone” debuted in 2018 and has transitioned from a cable drama to a significant television phenomenon. The majestic Montana landscape has become as defining for viewers as the characters themselves. Hauser views the scenery as a vital aspect of the show’s success. Reflecting on its journey, he mentioned how the show started locally and has now reached a global audience. During a recent trip to Europe, he noted seeing people dressed as cowboys, showcasing the show’s charm beyond the borders of the U.S.
When discussing the show’s wider appeal, Hauser attributed it to Sheridan’s storytelling prowess and the allure of Montana. He believes that the stories portrayed resonate deeply, inviting audiences to appreciate the essence of the Wild West. Travel advisors see this emotional connection manifest in the rising demand for vacations in these picturesque settings.
Duckworth observed that fans aren’t merely searching for scenic backdrops; they desire to experience the lifestyle depicted on screen. The desire to “set jet” often leads people to seek out more remote or luxurious accommodations, adding a sense of adventure to their getaways. He noted that Texas is set to benefit from this trend as new filming locations will undoubtedly attract attention, similar to Montana’s experience with “Yellowstone.” Popular filming spots, such as Ferris and Sanders Ranch, are expected to draw fans of “Dutton Ranch.” The latter has historical significance, dating back to the 1800s.
Travel advisors like Chris Porter have already noticed a shift in travel patterns, with families, who typically prefer beach or cruise vacations, looking towards ranch living in Texas. Interestingly, the modern traveler is not opting for a rustic experience, but rather a luxurious one that reflects the lavish lifestyle portrayed in Sheridan’s works. They’ve shown a willingness to pay for high-end experiences that include gourmet dining and immersive ranch activities.
As “Dutton Ranch” prepares to unfold, Hauser expressed that filming in Texas provides a fresh set of challenges—different landscapes, climates, and characters. Yet, he and co-star Kelly Reilly hope to maintain the essence of their beloved characters, affirming that they intend to keep Rip and Beth as strong and compelling as ever.
The changing landscape of tourism appears significant. With increasing interest in Texas due to its favorable climate and luxury offerings, travel trends suggest it may become the next popular destination for fans eager to connect with the world of “Dutton Ranch.”
