Anchor Brewing Company Revives Classic Branding

San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing Company, recognized as the first modern craft brewery in the U.S., is revamping its branding after a previous rebranding didn’t go as planned. The company has secured federal approval to reintroduce its classic label design for its popular Anchor Steam beer and Old Foghorn ale, featuring original artwork from Jim Stitt, who has designed their labels for an impressive 45 years.

“It really makes sense for them to revert back to the original label,” commented Patrick Costello, a former employee at Anchor Brewing. He noted that the rush of negative feedback following the last rebranding might have influenced this decision.

In 2024, Chobani CEO Hamdi Ulukaya acquired the brewery and has expressed a commitment to restore its cherished brand. He also purchased the brewery’s Potrero Hill location, sparking speculation that the well-known taproom might reopen someday.

This anticipation grew stronger recently when Ulukaya shared posts on social media indicating activity at the brewery, hinting at a potential reopening.

The brewery, which had been a staple for over 127 years, was forced to shut down in 2023 due to consistent financial struggles, with mounting operating costs and declining sales to blame.

After a controversial rebranding in 2021 that provoked backlash from loyal patrons and criticism regarding its messaging towards social issues, fans expressed their displeasure strongly. Some believed that the new branding was detrimental to a traditional craft that many had loved for years.

Anchor Brewing’s restoration seems to resonate with many who want to see the brewery thrive again, while also raising questions about the balance between modern business practices and traditional brewing values.
