Pennsylvania state trooper Michael Pahira fatally shot by truck driver Michael Bon, an undocumented immigrant from Haiti, according to a report

A police officer in Pennsylvania was tragically killed by a truck driver who had immigrated illegally. This driver, who apparently came into the U.S. during the Biden administration, had obtained a commercial driver’s license in Massachusetts after not leaving the country when ordered to do so.

The incident occurred early Wednesday morning around 7 a.m. Trooper Michael E. Pahila Jr., 44, was conducting an inspection of a semi-truck on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County. During this time, another truck lost control and collided with the one Pahila was inspecting, leading to a tragic series of events that ultimately struck the officer. State police provided details regarding this incident.

Pahila’s patrol car was stationed behind the truck with its emergency lights activated as he checked another vehicle parked on the shoulder. Then the collision took place.

The second truck, driven by a 33-year-old named Michael Bonn, hit the side mirror of Pahila’s car and subsequently crashed into another truck. The crash was severe enough that both truck cabs caught fire.

Nearby construction workers noticed the smoke and rushed to assist the crew involved in the wreck.

Pahila was quickly taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to officials.

Bonn, originally from Haiti, entered the U.S. via Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in July 2024, entering as a parolee under U.S. Customs and Border Protection. However, his application for Temporary Protected Status was denied in October 2024.

Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security ended his parole in June 2025, instructing him to leave the country. Yet, he chose to remain in the U.S., settling in Brockton, Massachusetts.

While there, he managed to get a no-domicile commercial driver’s license from Massachusetts, starting his career as a truck driver. The Massachusetts Registrar of Motor Vehicles stated that he had applied for the special license in March 2025 when he was still legally allowed to work in the country under federal laws.

His license went through a renewal in February 2026, although just a month earlier, the Trump administration had advised against renewing or issuing new non-domiciled commercial licenses.

“The death of Trooper Michael Pahila Jr. is an incredibly tragic loss. We mourn his passing, and our hearts go out to his loved ones and fellow officers,” a spokesperson for the RMV remarked.

Many believe this situation warrants full prosecution for the defendant. They pointed out that under federal guidelines, Bonn was initially deemed eligible to hold a commercial license and was able to drive legally.

Bonn was injured in the accident and transported to the hospital. He has since been arrested and faces multiple charges including vehicular homicide, recklessly endangering others, manslaughter, and reckless driving.

Currently, he is being held on $700,000 bail, with an immigration detainer from the Department of Homeland Security filed against him.

Pahila, who had been with the Pennsylvania State Police since 2007, is remembered as a great officer and person. He had recently returned home to be with his ailing mother during her cancer treatment.

The Pennsylvania governor shared a touching memory: “I spent time with Mike’s family and friends who spoke highly of him, from his high school wrestling achievements to his passion for cooking and his commitment to his mother.” He also recounted helping Pahila’s mother during her treatment.

“Officer Pahila was truly one of the best. Lori and I are keeping the Pennsylvania State Police family in our thoughts as they cope with this heartbreaking loss,” the governor expressed.
