Argentina’s Rollercoaster Win Against Cape Verde
Another unexpected turn in the tournament could potentially send the defending World Cup champions home sooner than anticipated.
Following a thrilling extra-time victory over Cape Verde, Argentina’s Lionel Messi expressed concern about the “bad” plays captured on tape during the match. The game, held on Friday, ended with Argentina winning 3-2 and moving on to the Round of 16, where they will face Egypt on July 7.
In a contest where they had to rally from behind twice, Argentina finally scored the decisive goal in the 111th minute. Cape Verde, known for being the smallest nation to reach this stage and ranked 64th by FIFA, put up a fierce fight.
Messi reflected on the game, stating, “As I always say, today we made a huge effort, both good and bad. The key now is to rest and think about what comes next. There were positives, but we certainly need to address the negatives.” He highlighted that while their journey so far had some victories, today’s match revealed areas in need of improvement.
This match marked the first time Argentina faced a challenging opponent in the tournament. Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute, recording his tournament-leading seventh goal at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, but Cape Verde fought back, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 59th minute.
Argentina regained the lead in the 92nd minute, only for Cape Verde to equalize again in the 103rd minute, creating a tense atmosphere that hinted at a possible penalty shootout. Eventually, fate favored the champions, as an own goal by Dinny Borges following a corner sealed the win for Argentina.
Praising Cape Verde for their impressive performance, Messi acknowledged the discomfort they caused his team throughout the match.
Discussing the challenge, Messi noted, “We anticipated a tough game. There was no chance for us to underestimate this team, especially given their performances against Spain and Uruguay. After scoring our first goal, we thought we could control the game, but it was actually the opposite. We lost our focus, struggled to press effectively, and allowed them to capitalize on our weaknesses.” He added, “This is a knockout tournament, and nothing will come easy.”
As things stand, Argentina remains a favorite to win, second only to France, yet the challenges presented by formidable opponents like Cape Verde could complicate their path ahead.
Coach Lionel Scaloni emphasized the need for reflection on the negative aspects of their game. “No teams are easy to beat. Hats off to Cape Verde,” he remarked. “We will discuss the negatives, but let’s also celebrate the positives—staying relentless is key.”
