Omega-3 Supplements Fall Short in Improving Cognitive Health
A recent study reveals that while fish oil supplements successfully deliver omega-3 fatty acids to the brain, they don’t enhance cognitive health in older adults who may be at risk for Alzheimer’s disease.
For quite some time, fish oil has been hailed as a straightforward means to boost brain health, primarily due to the omega-3 fatty acids that are vital for forming and maintaining brain cell membranes. However, this new research suggests that the reality might be more intricate than merely increasing omega-3 levels.
Scientists at Keck Medicine of USC discovered that even though high doses of fish oil supplements elevated omega-3 levels in the brain, they did not lead to improvements in memory, cognitive functions, or even brain structure among older adults at a higher risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Published on June 18 in eBioMedicine, the results indicate that further understanding of how aging brains process these nutrients might be needed, rather than just increasing their availability.
“We all hope for a simple solution to prevent Alzheimer’s, but our findings indicate that fish oil supplements don’t seem to safeguard brain health,” stated Hussein Naji Yassine, MD, who directs the USC Center for Personalized Brain Health and led this study. “Although omega-3s are crucial for creating brain cell connections essential for cognition, our results don’t endorse fish oil supplements as a way to prevent Alzheimer’s.”
Study Overview
The research involved 365 adults aged between 55 and 80 who infrequently ate fish—an important dietary source of omega-3s—and were deemed to be at risk for Alzheimer’s. About 47% of these participants carried the APOE4 gene, a significant genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer’s.
Participants were randomly divided into two groups: one received daily fish oil supplements containing 2,000 mg of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a key omega-3 for brain function, while the other group was given a placebo. The first key question revolved around whether the omega-3 from these supplements could actually penetrate the brain.
To investigate this, researchers measured DHA levels in the cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain. After six months, DHA levels in the brain increased by an average of 17%, confirming that the omega-3 had reached its destination.
The next part involved determining if this increase had any tangible impact. Participants took memory and cognitive tests at the beginning and again two years later. Results showed that those taking DHA supplements didn’t perform better than the placebo group. Additionally, brain scans revealed that the supplements did not prevent the shrinkage of the hippocampus, a memory-related area often linked to Alzheimer’s risk and brain aging.
Exploring New Directions
Yassine and his colleagues are now delving into why omega-3 supplements can access the brain but fail to yield observable health benefits. Drawing from previous studies, they propose that omega-3s may be more effective when included as part of a Mediterranean-style diet—rich in natural omega-3s and associated with lower Alzheimer’s risk—rather than consumed in isolation as a supplement.
“We aim to gain a clearer understanding of how the brain utilizes omega-3s and whether elements like overall health, dietary habits, genetic predisposition, and age influence the brain’s ability to absorb and make use of these nutrients,” Yassine noted. “Our goal is to develop medications that might help the brain more effectively utilize these nutrients to maintain cognitive abilities.”
A Holistic Approach to Living
While this study did not examine broader lifestyle factors, Yassine’s team stresses that maintaining brain health likely relies more on holistic, healthy living rather than solely on fish oil supplements.
“Staying healthy throughout one’s life is the best avenue we have for reducing Alzheimer’s risk, with regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and a balanced diet being crucial,” Yassine explained. “Living a healthy lifestyle acts like regular maintenance for the brain, ensuring it functions effectively. Just as a car engine falters without attention, the brain is more prone to dysfunction if other health issues are left unaddressed.”
