Investigation Underway in Ferguson Shooting
Authorities are in search of a gunman following the tragic shooting of a Missouri mother, who was killed outside a gas station while buying Slushies with her two young children.
Shakira Martin, aged 35, lost her life shortly before midnight on Tuesday at a BP gas station located at the intersection of South Florissant and Woodstock streets in Ferguson. The incident reportedly stemmed from an argument that began inside the store and continued into the parking lot, according to the Ferguson Police Department.
During what should have been a simple outing on a warm summer night for frozen drinks, multiple shots rang out as Martin was returning to her car with her kids, ages 9 and 6. Investigators suggest she was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
“She was just there to buy drinks for her kids,” Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle stated in an interview. “The children were unharmed physically but, understandably, are mentally scarred. It’s heartbreaking to think of what they witnessed.”
A second victim, an adult male, was also struck by gunfire and is currently in critical condition. Police have yet to clarify if he was involved in the initial altercation or if he was the intended target.
The conflict reportedly erupted inside the gas station before it escalated outside. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
Martin leaves behind five children and a loving family facing a difficult transition. According to a GoFundMe campaign set up in her honor, she was planning to move into a new home the day after her death. The Slushy trip was meant to celebrate this significant change in their lives, which has now been shattered by violence.
As the fundraiser notes, “Our hearts are broken as we mourn the unimaginable loss of our beloved Shakira Martin, taken from us far too soon at just 35 years old.” It describes her as a “devoted mother” who didn’t have life insurance. Funds raised will help cover funeral expenses and support her children’s immediate needs.
The Ferguson Police Department urges anyone with information regarding the shooting to reach out at 314-522-3100 or contact CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS.
