Trump Intervenes on Balogun’s Red Card Suspension
President Donald Trump has reached out directly to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, urging him to reconsider the suspension related to the contentious red card issued to U.S. men’s national team star Folarin Balogun during the Round of 32 win. Reports by The New York Times suggest this intervention was significant.
On Sunday, FIFA announced it had lifted Balogun’s suspension, allowing him to participate in the crucial World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium scheduled for Monday.
During the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Balogun received a red card for a foul on defender Tarik Mujaremović, leading to a suspension in line with FIFA’s World Cup Regulations, specifically Article 10.5.
FIFA referenced Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Law, which permits the judicial body to suspend entirely or partially, the enforcement of disciplinary actions.
This article also mentions the possibility of a probationary period ranging from one to four years upon suspension of sanctions.
After the announcement, Trump publicly praised FIFA’s decision on Truth Social, expressing gratitude: “Thank you to FIFA for doing the right thing and reversing a great injustice.” His ongoing relationship with Infantino is noted as particularly strong as the World Cup heats up.
Balogun had been facing a one-year suspension, although FIFA has indicated it was a kind of “grace period.” It’s unclear what that exactly entails moving forward.
FIFA also warned that if Balogun commits any further violations of similar nature during this trial period, the initial suspension will be reinstated, possibly leading to additional penalties.
This decision is particularly critical for the U.S. team, eager to advance to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2002. Their match against Belgium in Seattle holds significant weight, especially since Balogun is currently the leading scorer for the U.S. in this tournament with three goals.
However, this ruling has sparked controversy, particularly from Belgium, with their football federation expressing surprise and discontent at the decision. They stated they are considering all avenues to safeguard the interests of all participating teams and maintain fair play during the tournament.
