Doctors Thought It Was a Spider Bite, Then She Began to Lose Her Sight

Woman’s Shocking Health Crisis After Suspected Bug Bite

A young woman, initially believing she had a simple bug bite, experienced a frightening chain of events that involved multiple hospital visits, surgeries, and even temporary vision loss.

On April 2, Emma Selvidge, 19, woke up at 3 a.m. feeling a lump on her forehead. Her first thought was that she had been bitten by something, and she decided to visit urgent care the next morning.

Doctors suggested it could be a spider bite and treated her for a possible infection. They gave her a shot, prescribed antibiotics, and sent her home.

“Within about 10 minutes, the swelling became significantly worse and started spreading into my eye,” Selvidge shared. “It was frightening to watch it change so quickly.”

Despite going to work that day, Selvidge’s concerns grew as she began to experience vision loss. After her shift, she went to the ER, where they suspected an abscess and ordered a CT scan.

During this time, the swelling was rapidly worsening, and she was treated as a precaution for possible MRSA.

Eventually, she had to undergo surgery to drain the abscess, and during the procedure, doctors discovered an unrelated issue with her tonsils that may require another surgery.

Having never had surgery before, Selvidge was understandably anxious, even brought to tears. Thankfully, the operation went well, but she still faced complications affecting her eyesight.

After a few nights in the hospital, she was discharged on April 5, but the struggles were far from over. About a month later, the swelling returned, which was disheartening since she thought she was on the mend. This recurrence brought severe sinus infections and persistent headaches.

Just two weeks after her discharge, the swelling returned for a third time. Each episode heightened her anxiety, especially with doctors unable to pinpoint the cause.

Following this last instance, Selvidge was left with ongoing vision issues and debilitating headaches that endured for days. Sometimes she felt a lack of blood flow to her brain, which has been particularly challenging to cope with.

By the time of her third hospitalization, doctors diagnosed her with mild stenosis of the right transverse sinus and narrowing in a major vein responsible for draining blood from the brain, yet the underlying cause remained unclear.

Still recovering from surgery, Selvidge deals with daily headaches, a sore throat, and vision complications. She is on sinus medication to help manage her symptoms but noted that her recovery has been “much slower” than she had hoped.

“This experience completely changed my life,” she reflected. “What I thought was just a bug bite turned into multiple hospitalizations, surgeries, and lingering health problems. Not knowing what’s causing it has been really hard, because there’s the fear that it could happen again.”

Selvidge has been documenting her journey on social media, hoping to raise awareness that it’s important to trust one’s instincts when it comes to health. She emphasizes the need to advocate for oneself in healthcare settings.

“Even though I still don’t have all the answers, I’m choosing to stay hopeful and take my recovery one day at a time,” she added. “I hope that by sharing my story, someone else will recognize when something isn’t right and seek medical attention before it becomes life-threatening.”
