Tough Week for Ryan Weathers
It’s been a challenging few days for Ryan Weathers.
The left-handed pitcher, who recently dealt with a team-wide illness, faced another rough outing on Sunday, where he only lasted 4.0 innings in a 6-1 defeat to the Twins.
Weathers mentioned that he had bouts of nausea during the game, trying to “fix” the issue but ultimately ended up giving up four earned runs and allowing runners in scoring position for every inning except one.
Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged Weathers’ effort despite the unfavorable weather. “He went out there and fought,” Boone commented. “I thought his stuff looked really good. His changeup was impressive, with plenty of swing-and-misses. Minnesota really made it tough for him today.”
Although Weathers racked up six strikeouts, he didn’t fully recover from a tough start to the match.
An early double from Minnesota’s Austin Martin set the tone for the day, putting the Twins up 1-0. Weathers ended up leaving the game in the fifth inning after hitting Luke Keishall and walking Martin.
Reflecting on his performance, Weathers expressed, “I want to do well for the team and try to win games. That did not happen today.”
He pitched up to 88 throws, one of which was a wild pitch that advanced Royce Lewis to second base, leading to a run following Brooks Lee’s single.
The 26-year-old, now in his sixth MLB season, is on pace to exceed his career-high of 94 innings from his rookie season with the Padres. Unfortunately, this mileage hasn’t helped him regain his form in recent months.
After a decent outing against the Orioles on May 11, where he allowed only two runs in 6 1/3 innings, his ERA dipped to 3.00. Following this latest loss, though, it has now climbed to 4.29, causing some frustration from fans aimed at relief pitchers Paul Blackburn and Camilo Doval.
Weathers is expected to pitch again either in the final game of the Rays series or against the Nationals, though neither matchup seems particularly favorable for a player looking to turn things around.
