Eliezer Alfonzo’s MLB Debut Amid Tragedy

The most significant moments in Eliezer Alfonzo’s baseball journey are unfolding during a profoundly challenging time in his personal life.

As Alfonzo readied for his MLB debut on Sunday, it was reported that his stepmother and 16-year-old sister, who had been missing after last month’s catastrophic earthquake in Venezuela, were found deceased.

This tragic news arrived just a day after Alfonzo’s family expressed their lingering hope for their safe return.

“I don’t know if I’ll ever see her again,” Alfonzo shared with the California Post regarding his sister, Eliana, who was excited about his journey to the majors. “But I’m sure God will bless me to see me play here in the big leagues.”

Venezuela has been rocked by a series of devastating earthquakes, creating widespread destruction.

In the wake of this heartache, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Alfonzo would still play in Sunday’s game. At 26, he is the son of former MLB catcher Eliezer Alfonzo Sr., and he spent nearly a decade in the minors awaiting his moment in the big leagues.

“I really don’t know what to say about this, but my heart goes out to him and his family,” Roberts remarked. “He’s here. He’s going to play today. But it’s tough, very tough.”

Having spent years in the Twins’ minor league system, Alfonzo joined the Dodgers as a minor league free agent this offseason, earning his call-up after boasting a .313 batting average with Triple-A Oklahoma City this season.

On arriving at the Dodgers’ clubhouse, he expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support from his teammates and the organization.

“I’m not going to lie,” Alfonzo admitted. “Last week was probably one of the toughest weeks of my life.”

Yet, his family is still clinging to the hope of finding their sister and stepmother alive, encouraged by the discovery of their dog earlier this week.

In what should have been a celebratory milestone in Alfonzo’s career, he faced heartbreaking news. “I know it’s difficult given everything that’s going on right now,” he reflected the day before. “But I always keep my country and my family in mind. Everything I do is for them, so I want to make them proud.”
