Chuck Todd expresses anger that Trump turned the nation's birthday into a celebration of himself.

Former NBC News anchor Chuck Todd has taken a jab at President Trump, claiming the president has overshadowed the celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary, turning it into a personal event for himself.

On his “Chuck Toddcast” podcast Saturday, Todd expressed concern that Trump is detracting from the bipartisan initiatives that Congress put in place to honor the nation’s history. “I think it’s pretty clear that this anniversary feels less significant than it should because Donald Trump made it all about him,” he remarked.

Not one to hold back, Todd stated bluntly, “Donald Trump has ruined America’s brand and the birthday celebration.”

He contrasted the White House’s “Freedom 250” festivities with the America 250 Commission’s vision, which aimed to involve state and local organizations in sharing their unique slices of American history. “Sure, it might have been a bit messy or even kind of dull, but sometimes that blandness carries its own importance,” Todd noted.

However, he criticized Trump for sidelining that effort in favor of his own initiative. “He couldn’t just let it be. He had to create his own version of a celebration,” Todd remarked.

He talked about how Trump’s “Freedom 250” initiative, where the president and vice president took leading roles, ended up competing with the Congress-established America 250 program. Todd also criticized a recent UFC event held on the White House lawn as part of the celebrations.

“Trump just took over everything. He even staged his own little UFC fight on the lawn,” Todd said, describing how a cage and bouncy house were set up for the event. “It’s all about the imagery; there’s literally a cage on the White House lawn.”

In his view, the nation’s birthday turned into a personal rally for Trump, diminishing the collective celebration Americans should have shared. Todd suggested that Trump’s approach may alienate those who might have otherwise engaged in the celebrations.

“This is why so many people are opting out,” he observed.

Towards the conclusion of his nearly hour-long commentary, Todd lamented that an opportunity to genuinely honor the country was wasted. “It’s frustrating that we had a chance to celebrate, and instead, we see a president who isn’t fully embracing the role he should play,” he commented.

In response, White House Press Secretary Davis Engle defended Trump, stating, “The celebration of America’s 250th anniversary demonstrated great patriotism across the nation and the president was pleased to participate. Only those afflicted with severe Trump Derangement Syndrome would see issues here.”
