New York minimum wage increase goes into effect as 2024 begins

As the United States ushered in a new year, New York's minimum wage was raised statewide at the stroke of midnight.

Minimum wage workers in the Empire State received an 80 cents on the dollar raise this year, the first in a series of incremental increases expected over the next few years.

The minimum wage for some workers in New York City and surrounding suburbs has increased from $15 to $16.

In other parts of the state, the minimum wage increased from $14.20 to $15. Wages will continue to increase each year until minimum wage workers are paid $17 in New York City and $16 in other states.

This process is expected to be completed by 2026.

Further increases to keep up with inflation will be linked to changes in the consumer price index for urban wage earners and office workers.

Democratic Gov. Cathy Hochul worked with the New York State Legislature to develop a plan to raise wages, but it was criticized by business owners who say the minimum wage hike will put some businesses into trouble.

Other Democrats to Mr. Hochul's left argued that the wage increases were not enough.
