Russia Launches Record Number of Drone Strikes Across Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia launched a record 90 Shahid-type drones over Ukraine in the early hours of the new year, the Ukrainian air force said Monday, while Russia also reported attacks by Ukraine.

Odesa's military administrator, Ole Kipel, announced that debris from one of the 87 downed drones hit a house in Odesa, killing a 15-year-old boy and injuring seven others. The debris also caused a number of small fires, including at the city's port.

In the western city of Lviv, a Russian attack severely damaged a museum dedicated to Roman Shukhevich, a controversial Ukrainian nationalist and military commander who fought for Ukrainian independence during World War II. I received it. A university building in the city of Dubrjany was also damaged, but no casualties were reported.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy wrote on social media, calling the strike “symbolic and cynical,” adding: “This is a war for our history.”

Meanwhile, Ukrainian military shelling of the Russian-occupied region of Donetsk killed four people and wounded another 13, according to Denis Pushilin, the region's Russian-installed leader. Russian state media reported that journalists were among the victims, but gave no further details.

Shelling on the Russian border town of Shevekino also killed one person and wounded another, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said.

The airstrike follows a series of intense airstrikes that began on Friday, when Russia launched an 18-hour offensive that one air force official said was the largest airstrike of the war.

At least 49 people were killed in the shelling, and rescue teams in Kiev reported Monday that they had recovered at least eight more bodies from beneath the rubble.

On Saturday, 21 people, including three children, were killed in an attack blamed on Ukraine in the center of the Russian border city of Belgorod, local officials reported.
