NYC storm could bring significant snow for first time in nearly 700 days

I hope it finally snows.

The Big Apple will be hit by a nor'easter this weekend, potentially bringing measurable amounts of snow to the region for the first time in nearly 700 days.

The storm is expected to arrive in Gotham Saturday night and continue into Monday morning, potentially bringing more than an inch of snow to the region for the first time since February 2022, said FOX Weather meteorologist Marissa. Rothenbacher told the Post.

“This is probably the first chance this season to actually get a significant amount of snow in the Northeast,” Lautenbacher said.

But it was too early for Lautenbacher to predict snow totals, and there was no guarantee that temperatures in New York City would be low enough to avoid a wintry mix.

“if [the low pressure system] Travel a little further inland, then pass I-95 along the coastline. As cold air moves further inland, much of the interior will see snow. Then, as warmer air moves in, the snow disappears. It snowed,” she said.

“But if the cold air develops further offshore, there will be more cold air coming in from the backside, increasing the likelihood of snow in New York.”

The Big Apple saw only a small amount of white snow in 2023, with a total snowfall of just 2.3 inches, the lowest on record since the mid-1800s, Lautenbacher said.

On average, the city receives about 30 inches of snow each year. This means the city received 92% less snow than average last year.

Tuesday marked the 688th day without at least an inch of snow falling in Central Park. The second-longest streak in history, 400 days, stopped in 1998, Rautenbacher said.

The last time the city received less than 4 inches of snow was more than 100 years ago, in 1913, forecasters told the Post.

Mr Rautenbacher warned that regardless of the amount of snowfall this weekend, there was likely to be “complete chaos” in the city on Sunday, along with coastal flooding and strong winds.

The forecaster said he was rooting for a healthy dose of white stuff, adding he was “disappointed” by the lack of rainfall in recent record-setting “fascinating” winters.

“It's not cold enough to get any snow in December,” Lautenbacher said, as the nation reels from a year of unprecedented heat that is part of a decades-long pattern of climate change. '' he lamented.

Other cities along I-95 have also recently set snow-free records.

“2023 was the warmest year on record for the entire country. And in 2023, most of the country was more than 5 degrees warmer than average, with the exception of perhaps a few areas, such as the southeast.” said the meteorologist.

“But we also had a warm December nationally, so many people in the north of the country are seeing a snow drought.”
