LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – Police in Arkansas say an off-duty police officer working security at a Walmart on New Year's Eve shot and killed a shoplifting suspect who attacked him with a knife.

Little Rock Police Officer Kreshun King Sr. was attempting to restrain a suspected shoplifter inside a store Sunday night when the man pulled out a knife and cut the officer's hand, according to KARK_TV. Assistant Police Chief Joe Miller said.

Miller said King pulled out a gun and ordered the man to drop the knife, then fired as the man ignored the officers' commands and continued toward King.

Little Rock police said the man who was shot, Benjamin McDaniel, 30, died after being taken to a hospital. King was treated at a hospital and released. He was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, which is standard practice in Little Rock officer-involved shootings.
