Officials announced Tuesday that four legal border crossings along the southern border that had been closed due to increased encounters with migrants would reopen on Thursday.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced Legal border crossings in Texas, Arizona and California are scheduled to reopen at various times Thursday morning. The move comes just a month after government agencies closed several border crossings along the southwest border, citing rising numbers of migrants and people smuggling.
The agency emphasized that it continues to take action against persons who are not legally in the United States or who have no legal basis to be in the United States.
“CBP continues to prioritize border security missions as needed as this situation evolves,” the agency said in a statement. “We continue to assess the security situation, adjust our operational plans, and continue our enforcement efforts against noncitizens who do not use lawful channels and processes (such as booking through CBP One) and those who have no legal basis to remain in the country. We will deploy our resources to maximize the use of the United States.”
The border crossing that will reopen is in Eagle Pass, Texas. San Diego, California. Lukeville, Arizona. and Nogales, Arizona.
The announcement comes as Republicans hope to increase pressure on border security talks in the new year, with a group of 60 Republican lawmakers scheduled to visit the Eagle Pass border crossing on Wednesday. Ta. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) sent a letter to President Biden last month urging him to take executive action on the border, but many Republicans believe the border situation is spiraling out of control under Biden's leadership. It is claimed that it has become.
“Legislative reforms aimed at restoring operational control on our nation's southern border must be enacted, but the crisis on our nation's southern border has worsened to the point that serious action can no longer wait. must, and it has to start with you,” Johnson wrote at the time.
