Hamas froze negotiations for a while Second agreement to release additional hostages It was then held in Gaza. Israel assassinates Hamas deputy leader Saleh al-Arouri in Beirutreported Al Arabiya News Agency.
Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh said the assassination was an “act of terrorism”, a violation of Lebanon's sovereignty and an extension of Israel's hostility toward the Palestinian people.
Before the assassination, Israel had hoped that Hamas would soften its stance slightly and that a compromise could be reached to move forward with a deal that would secure the release of some of the 129 prisoners remaining in Gaza.
Hamas has said for weeks that it would not negotiate with Israel to release the hostages until a permanent ceasefire takes effect and Israeli forces withdraw from Gaza.
In recent days, there have been reports that Hamas has agreed to negotiate before Israel's complete withdrawal. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Israelis at a press conference this week that Hamas had withdrawn its demands and there was a move toward dialogue.
But Israel has also said for months that it would kill all Hamas leaders and terrorists involved in the October 7 terrorist attack that killed 1,200 people in Israel.
Israel has not taken official responsibility for the Beirut attack, but is widely suspected of carrying out targeted killings.
