Multiple arrested in fatal shooting of California police officer during burglary

Multiple arrests have been made in connection with the fatal shooting of a police officer responding to a robbery at a marijuana dispensary in Oakland, California, last week, authorities announced Tuesday.

Auckland Police have confirmed that several people have been arrested in connection with the death of 36-year-old constable Tuan Le. FOX2 KTVU One suspect has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The report named 27-year-old Mark Sanders as the suspected shooter. Mr. Sanders was also charged with other felonies related to the incident.

After Sanders was arrested shortly after midnight Tuesday, Oakland police broadcast a message on their radio channel announcing the arrest, the station said.

“I just wanted to let everyone know that the murderer of Police Officer Tuan Le is in custody,” the message read. “Please take care of each and every one of us.”

Police said around 1 a.m. Friday, officers responded to a report of a robbery in progress at a marijuana business in the 400 block of Embarcadero. By the time officers arrived on the scene, the suspects had already fled.

Just after 4:30 a.m., police responded to a second report of a robbery at the same location. When officers arrived on scene, they found multiple people running from the business, authorities said.

Police said the men fired at the plainclothes officers, hitting one person. Officers did not fire any shots during the incident.

The injured officer, later identified as Lee, was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. He was surrounded by his wife, mother and members of the Oakland Police Department.

The station said Mr Lee was a devoted husband who will be remembered for “his kindness, his smile and the positive change he made in the lives of those around him.”

“His death leaves a void in the hearts of law enforcement, the city of Oakland, and those who knew him,” Oakland police said in a statement. “He is a true hero who dedicated his life to making our community safer.”

Mr. Lee was born in Saigon, Vietnam, on June 1, 1987, later moved to Auckland, and was naturalized on September 11, 2001. He graduated from the police academy in February 2020.

Police said the investigation was ongoing and officers “will work tirelessly to bring justice to the Lu family.”
