“Danger!” A contestant named Sophia apparently misunderstood a Final Jeopardy clue and lost the match Tuesday night.
Fans of the game show rallied around the young woman after her loss, calling the moment “brutal” and “a heartbreaking way to lose.”
Moving on to the final round, Sophia placed second with a total of $14,600. A man named Michael took first place with $28,800, and a woman named Sharon took third place with $5,800.

The category is “Landmarks,” and the final danger clue reads, “During Pope John Paul II's 1987 visit to Los Angeles, pranksters hid this letter in a local landmark.” Ta.
The correct answer was “L,” and the clue was a reference to a story in which the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles was temporarily changed to “Hollywood.” Sharon answered the question correctly and the final prize was up to $6,800.
Sophia was next to reveal her answer, and she was visibly worried when she revealed that she had written the “Hollywood sign.” She appeared to be looking at her host, Ken Jennings, with an expectant look on her face, which many of her fans interpreted as seeming to expect her answer to be accepted.

When Mr. Jennings said, “It's too bad you found the right landmark and didn't tell us the letter,'' she slumped, clearly disappointed, and scoffed. I heard him say, “No.”

She bet almost everything, and the final total was $399.
The first place contestant, Michael, guessed “O” and his measly $500 bet dropped to $28,300, making him the winner of the game. If Sofia had given the correct answer, she would have been declared the winner.
Although she did not appear after the revelation, “Danger!” fans discussed the sad event on Reddit.
“Oh my god, Sofia already,” one person wrote, along with a sad face emoji. “She was so sad, she could have won.”
Another wrote: “Absolutely tragic FJ. What a strange double mistake for what seemed like a relatively simple FJ clue when I was really rooting for Sofia.”

One viewer speculated that Sophia was trying not to cry when she realized she had given the wrong answer, while another said: “She went through five stages of sadness in about 15 seconds. I've been through it all,'' he said, admitting that he almost cried for her.

The moment was described as a “heartbreaking loss”, with one Reddit user claiming to have been in the audience at the taping of the episode, writing: “Ken said if she had circled the L or if the arrow had If they had, they told them so.” She could have accepted it. ”
