Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis he said to declare In a Wednesday editorial in the Des Moines Register, he addressed the border emergency on his first day in office.
“On my first day in office, I will declare a national emergency and ban all illegal entry into the United States,” the Florida governor said. “False asylum applications aimed at circumventing proper immigration procedures will no longer be accepted.”
“I will end the abuse of parole powers that are used to admit thousands of illegal immigrants every month. We will give you full authority to deport people who have no rights,” DeSantis continued.
DeSantis also attacked President Biden and former President Trump over their handling of border policy.
“This crisis has reached unprecedented levels under President Joe Biden, who has failed to fulfill his constitutional oath to see to the faithful enforcement of the law,” DeSantis said. “If there had been a border wall, Biden would not have been able to keep 8 million illegal aliens from entering the country, something Donald Trump promised but failed to deliver.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said negotiators were close to reaching a long-disputed border agreement that could pave the way for aid to Ukraine.
“We're making progress. We're closer than we've ever been, but this is a very difficult problem and we still have other challenges to overcome,” Schumer said at the opening of the Senate late in the 118th Congress. He spoke to reporters afterwards.
“Everyone has to do something to get this done. No one can have it their way,” Schumer said.
