After countless players opted out of their respective bowl games this postseason, those involved in bowl game operations know something needs to be done.
Bowl Senior Executive Director Jim Nagy said this bowl season is “not what we grew up watching,” and Nick Carparelli, Bowl Season Executive Director, agreed. seems to agree with that.
Carparelli has held the position for more than three years, and even when he took over, it wasn't uncommon for players to decline games, but now it's rampant.

“The problem isn't the bowl games or the bowl system. The problem is the transfer portal and the NIL and the early signing period all happening at the same time, all of the unregulated circumstances around it,” Carparelli said recently. yahoo sports. “That doesn't happen in other sports. That's something we need to fix.”
More players are opting out of bowl games to protect themselves for the NFL Draft, because realignment has made traditional bowl game matchups a thing of the past, or for other reasons.
As a result, Carparelli said compensation for players who participated in bowl games “requires a very real discussion.”
“I'd love to talk to the NCAA about the idea of paying student-athletes to promote the event itself. I don't know what the problem with that is yet,” he added.
“What is legal is that we can promote the title sponsor of the match, the destination of the match, the tournament or tourism board in that area. There are many things that can be done under the current rules, but I would like to do that.” I think there is a more direct way. ”

Many players left because they had already been transferred. Because Kyle McCord transferred to Syracuse, he didn't even play for Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, despite going 11-1 against Ohio State in the regular season.
“We need to review the structure around the transfer portal,” Carparelli said. “Maybe there should only be one transfer portal window at the end of the school year. Maybe it would allow student-athletes to rethink things. 'Let's see what happens in spring practice. Let's do it.''' Give coaches a chance to complete high school recruiting and evaluate rosters in the spring, and people can make decisions based on that. ”
After all, Carparelli wants to take everything back to the old days.

“Every commissioner and every head coach I talk to is adamant about the fact that bowl games and bowl seasons are extremely important to college football,” Carparelli said. “You really can't have a postseason system where you only have 12 chances. It's important to protect the bowl system, and all of our college football leaders are committed to that.”
