Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was asked Wednesday about formal plans to impeach him, just as he blamed Republicans for the border crisis.
In an interview on MSNBC, Mayorkas was asked how the Biden administration would respond to Democratic mayors who are calling for the federal government to step in and help sanctuary cities deal with the migrant crisis. But the secretary of state pushed back by attacking Texas Governor Greg Abbott (Republican).
“We're taking action at the border, and we're taking action on the challenges facing cities across the country,” Mayorkas said, without mentioning any “action.”
“Let me point out one fundamental issue here,” he continued, “and that is that we need Texas to work with other governors and other local officials to coordinate efforts to address the challenges. The fact is that we have a governor who is refusing to do so.'' This country needs to come together and deal with it.
“And the refusal to work with local and state officials is a flagrant failure of governance,” Mayorkas argued.
But just as Mr. Mayorkas did not offer a single example of “action” the Biden administration had taken to stop the border crisis, Mr. Abbott offered no example of any “action” the Biden administration had taken to stop the border crisis. There was not a single instance of “refusal to cooperate.” Border crisis.
Mayorkas went on to blame the Trump administration for the growing backlog of immigrants, who are forced to wait years for their asylum cases to be heard in immigration courts.
As Mayorkas abdicates responsibility for the border crisis, MSNBC host Willie Geist confronts him. In the news that was announced around the same time as the interview.: The House Homeland Security Committee is working to impeach Mayorkas for his role in the border crisis.
“Mr. Secretary, I know you have to run fast, before you do. We learned from Punchbowl News this morning that the House Homeland Security Committee has formally advanced impeachment proceedings against you, and that I just got the news that a hearing is scheduled for one week from today,'' Geist told Mayorkas.
Mayorkas said he would cooperate with the investigation. The first full committee hearing in the impeachment process will be held next Wednesday, January 10th.
