White House Dismisses South Africa’s Claim of Israeli ‘Genocide’ in Gaza

White House national security spokesman John Kirby on Wednesday dismissed South Africa's accusations that Israel is committing “genocide” in the Gaza Strip, calling such claims “worthless and counterproductive.” It has no basis in fact at all.”

Last week, South Africa It has been submitted Petition at the United Nations International Court of Justice Blame Israel is in violation of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide, to which Israel is a signatory.

South Africa falsely claimed that Israel was carrying out “indiscriminate use of force and forcible displacement of the population” in Gaza (Israeli attacks targeted Hamas and no civilians were forcibly displaced). Israel called the argument a “despicable and contemptible use of the court.”

In a statement to the Israeli cabinet last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said of South Africa's claims:

I would like to say a few words about South Africa's deceptive intimidation to the effect that Israel is “committing genocide.” No, South Africa, it's not us who came to commit genocide, it's Hamas. It would kill us all if it could. In contrast, the IDF acts as morally as possible. Hamas does everything possible to avoid harming civilians and uses them as human shields.

I ask. South Africa, and the rest of you who are evangelizing to us, where were you when millions of people were killed and forced from their homes in Syria, Yemen and other parts of the world? You weren't there because all you do now is heat and lies and vanity. We continue our defensive war, and our justice and morality are unparalleled.

The South African government supports the Palestinians in their war, and the ruling African National Congress has held talks with Hamas.

South Africa is aligned with a series of rogue states, including Russia. Critics of South Africa's foreign policy at home and abroad say it is jeopardizing South Africa's relationship with the United States and efforts to reauthorize the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), a trade deal that would benefit South Africa. It warns that this is a possibility. , when it expires next year.

Journalists attending the first White House briefing of the year focused their questions on the Middle East war. Many seemed to be making the case against Israel and the United States, such as in a bizarre exchange with a reporter who tried to blame the Biden administration for “escalation” in the Red Sea.
