Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie said he would not pardon former President Trump if he is elected president in 2024 and Trump is convicted.
In an interview Wednesday on “The View,” co-host Joy Behar pointed out that Republican presidential candidates Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis have said they would pardon Trump. , asked Mr. Christie if he was, and without hesitation he answered, “No.” would do the same.
“No, no, no, no,” Christie said, before Behar could finish her question.
He used his experience as a governor to explain why.
“As governor, I granted clemency,” Christie explained. “And one of the things you have to do is look at that person. That person has to accept responsibility for what he did. Donald Trump Do you think you will accept responsibility?”
“This is probably the easiest pardon decision I've ever had to make as president,” Christie said. “Aren't you going to take responsibility? Too bad. I'm going to jail.”
Trump, a leading Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election, currently faces four criminal indictments on a total of 91 charges.
Special Counsel Jack Smith's office filed two of these cases. One related to Trump's efforts to remain in office after losing the 2020 presidential election, and the other for knowingly retaining classified government documents and after receiving a subpoena for classified records. was also related to the refusal to return it. .
Christie similarly said it was “unimaginable” that Trump would be pardoned in the government documents case.
In July, he told NewsNation's Chris Cuomo, “Let's talk about the documents case. This is the only case that the president has jurisdiction over.” Given what is alleged in the indictment, if it is proven and the former president is convicted, it would be difficult to consider a pardon, as long as I believe he received a fair trial. ”
Mr. Christie's comments Wednesday came after he criticized other candidates in the race, saying they were “not telling the truth” about Mr. Trump.
