Just a month after her 18th birthday, a teenage mother was killed by a stray bullet at a house party in Georgia on her first night out after giving birth.
Shania Green was found dead in the backyard of her Grayson home at 1 a.m. Friday after police removed a party while investigating reports of a shooting. WANF reported.
She had a gunshot wound to the back of her head, Gwinnett County Police said:.
“Shania had just turned 18” and was focused on “lovingly raising her 7-month-old son,” her aunt, Sadie Long, wrote in an online fundraiser.
“Like any new mom, Shania was excited to finally be able to go outside and play a little,” she said of the teen mom's first night out.
“While enjoying a night out at a house party, multiple shots were fired from outside the home, striking Shania from inside the home and killing her,” she wrote.
“Shania was a wonderful daughter, mother, sister, granddaughter, and niece who touched the lives of those around her. She was known for her contagious beautiful smile and laugh. ” Long wrote.
“She was just figuring out who she was as a young woman and a new mother, navigating life with grace, compassion and kindness,” she added. “Her brilliant personality and her respectful demeanor have left so many people hurting and mourning for such a wonderful soul.”
As of Thursday morning, the account had collected more than $10,000 for the family's funeral expenses.
Neighbors told WANF they heard gunshots around 1 a.m. One neighbor provided news outlets with cellphone video that showed dozens of young people running from the house.
“I looked out the window and saw a bunch of kids in cars trying to leave the subdivision,” a neighbor told the outlet, without giving his name.
Relatives of the homeowner told WANF that the homeowner's son hosted the event while his parents were out of town.
A suspect in connection with the shooting has not yet been identified or arrested, according to officials and Green's family.
