Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) urged New Hampshire voters heading to the polls later this month to stand up against what she called the “sneakers” of the Republican Party.
Cheney criticized factions within the party that were devoted to former President Trump. Remarks at Dartmouth College Friday, the eve of the third anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
Cheney, who has emerged as one of President Trump's most outspoken critics, said of the upcoming US primary: “The world will be watching in just over two weeks when New Hamshire goes to the polls.” he said.
He added: “We want you to show the world that we will defeat this vile plague that is infesting the Republican Party.”
Cheney, once a prominent Republican, split with many members of her party in the aftermath of the riot and subsequent vote to impeach Trump.
“As a nation, we have reached a point where we cannot expect a group of elected Republicans to uphold the Constitution,” she said Friday.
Since being voted out of office in 2022, the former Wyoming lawmaker has issued several warnings about what he feels could happen if Trump is re-elected. She doubled down on her own claims Friday, arguing that the former president's actions and attempts to seize power only “threaten the very foundations of our democracy.”
Her comments came ahead of the New Hampshire Republican primary on January 23rd. Trump maintains her lead among Granite State voters, according to polls, but her rival Nikki Haley has closed the gap in recent weeks.
The Republican primary voting season begins in less than two weeks, with the Iowa caucuses taking place on January 15th.
