Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi), the former chairman of the now-defunct Jan. 6 Special Committee, said Friday on CNN's “The Lead” that former President Donald Trump was a candidate for the 2020 election. “He will have to suffer the consequences” of his actions regarding the incident, he said.
Asked about January 6th during a CNN town hall, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Florida) said, “That was not a good day for the country. The media picked it up. The left picked it up. They’re trying to take advantage of it and actually politicize it.”
Anchor Jake Tapper said, “They're claiming this is not patriotic. This was blown out of proportion by Democrats and the media. You're at the Capitol on January 6th, what do you think? Do you think so?”
“Some of the people defending the Capitol were injured, some lost their lives. Staff and people, including myself, were confined for several hours and unable to leave,” Thompson said. It's shameful that someone would try to trivialize it. “We are a better country than what happened on January 6th.'' It’s a sad day to try.”
He added: “These people want this country to be the best it can be, and they have sworn a solemn oath to protect and preserve this country, and yet they come up with language like this.'' .They don't deserve it,'' he added. To hold a public office. They have no right to promote patriotism in this country. I am confident that ultimately the people will have their say. The hundreds of people who are already in prison for those activities, and the hundreds who are going to prison, they are wrong. As I said earlier, in America we are above the law. Those who followed Donald Trump's antics and broke the law will have to pay the price. He will atone for and defend himself against the 91 charges against Donald Trump's head. At some point, he will suffer the consequences. ”
