Congressman Jim Clyburn (D.C.) on Sunday noted that former President Trump has received unwavering support from Republicans heading into 2024, saying the Biden campaign has not been able to break through the “MAGA wall.” He said he was concerned about this.
Clyburn acknowledged that the Biden administration's record is not what people have in mind.
“I have no problem with the Biden administration and its actions. My problem is that this president has not been able to break through the MAGA wall to tell the public exactly what he has done,” Clyburn said. said in an interview on CNN's “State of the Union.”
Clyburn, a longtime South Carolina congressman, is often credited with helping the Biden campaign ultimately secure the 2020 Democratic nomination after winning the Palmetto State that year. . Biden won his first early race in the South Carolina primary after securing Clyburn's endorsement.
In an interview Sunday, Clyburn said he had met with Biden to express his concerns about the Biden team's reelection efforts, but stressed that he was “not worried” but “very concerned.”
Mr. Clyburn focused specifically on student loan relief to explain Mr. Biden's efforts to keep his promise. Clyburn took issue with many people's focus on parts of Biden's debt relief plan that were struck down by the Supreme Court.
“If you think about something small and simple, like reducing student loan debt, he promised to reduce student loan debt and he did that. He was unable to keep some of his promises, as voters blocked his promises. But he looked elsewhere, canceling $132 billion in student loan debt for 3.4 million people. But who We don't write about it either. Nobody talks about it,” Clyburn said.
“As of yesterday, I'm still hearing from people that he hasn't kept his promises regarding student loan debt relief. And he has,” he added. “Eighty percent of what he said he was going to do, he actually did and continues to do, but people aren't paying attention to that. It focuses only on the 20 percent affected by that court's decision, not on who did it.”
Clyburn also noted Biden's record on the judiciary, noting that Biden has appointed Black women to the Supreme Court as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals. He also pointed to the Anti-Inflation Act, which caps the cost of insulin at $35 per month. Clyburn noted that his late wife died of diabetes and that he paid $800 a month for her medication.
