Mary Margaret Haxby Jones, 81, was found in her home's freezer by her family outside of San Diego.

The body was discovered by his family and reported to authorities on December 22nd.n.d. around 11:45 a.m., SDPD said in a statement Thursday.

Because of the unusual arrangement of the elderly man's body, the San Diego Police Department's Homicide Division was contacted to investigate.

Police said there were no signs of trauma on the body and the death was being investigated as suspicious.

Based on the investigation conducted, detectives concluded that Haxby-Jones may have been missing or dead for nine years.

The identity of the current occupant of the Zion Avenue home where the body was found is unknown.

Former homicide detective Pete Carrillo told reporters that Haxby-Jones' financial records would likely be examined by investigators.

“This is appropriation of a corpse. If someone dies, we have an obligation to call the authorities so it can be disposed of in the normal way,” Carrillo said. “The whole process was circumvented for a specific reason, and we can only assume that it was probably to benefit financially from not reporting her death.”

The coroner's office is still investigating the cause of death, according to SDPD.

Detectives are appealing to interview anyone who may know her or have relevant information about her.
