A man incarcerated at a Southern California prison was assaulted to death by two other inmates, guards said, and the case is being investigated as a homicide, state corrections officials said Monday.
On Sunday, officers used pepper spray seven times to quell an attack on Enrique Saucedo in the recreation yard at Centinela State Prison in Imperial County, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.
The 29-year-old victim was taken by ambulance to the medical center, where he died in the emergency room, the statement said.

The two alleged attackers are each serving sentences for murder and were placed in restrictive housing. The death is being investigated by jail officials and the county district attorney's office. The county coroner will determine Saucedo's official cause of death.
There were no injuries to staff or other inmates.
Saucedo was sentenced in 2018 to 14 years in prison for distributing an assault weapon and a controlled substance.
