Cardinals hire Chaim Bloom as advisor after Red Sox firing

Chaim Bloom has decided on his next baseball job.

The former Red Sox chief baseball officer was hired Monday as an advisor to Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak.

Mozeliak hinted that St. Louis could bring in outside help to the front office during winter meetings in November.

“I have known Chime for a long time and feel this is a great opportunity for the St. Louis Cardinals,” Mozeliak said. said in a statement. “It will be good to get an outside perspective on our organization from someone as respected as Mr. Chaim. It should be helpful to have a fresh perspective on every aspect of our baseball operations. ”

Bloom served as Boston's chief baseball executive from 2019 to 2023, but was fired in mid-September after the Red Sox fell away from the playoffs.

The baseball executive helped build the 2021 roster to compete in the ALCS, but the Red Sox finished last in the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season and in 2022 as well.

By letting go of Bloom, Boston tied for last place in the American League East with the Yankees, and ultimately ended the season in last place.

In his five years with the Red Sox, Bloom had a team record of 351 wins and 340 losses.

“I'm excited to join the Cardinals and be a part of this great organization,” Bloom said in a press release. “Mo and his team have welcomed me very warmly and I look forward to building relationships here, learning, contributing and helping us win.”

The Cardinals are coming off a season that fell far short of their goals with a record of 79 wins and 91 losses.

The Cardinals added starter Sonny Gray this offseason, signing the right-handed pitcher to a three-year, $75 million contract during a quiet winter.

The front office and head coach Oliver Marmol remain in place, and St. Louis is looking for help to get back to where it is in 2022.
