Lewis suffered burns and was rushed to the hospital on December 16th. Witnesses told investigators that people were gathered in the backyard of a home in the 600 block of West Pine, within Jacksboro city limits, and a small fire was burning inside a metal barrel.

Witnesses said Lewis was next to the barrel when an adult male, later identified as Lindsey, tried to make the fire bigger, so he grabbed a gasoline can and poured gasoline on the fire.
Gasoline and fire traveled across the barrel, igniting Lewis' hair and clothing.

Investigators later discovered that people present at the residence feared getting into trouble because there was alcohol on the premises. Instead of calling 9-1-1, they drove the boy to Faith Community Hospital.
From there, Lewis was taken by Air Evac helicopter to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, where he was treated for burns over 90% of his body. She passed away from her injuries on Sunday, January 7th.
