Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has called on Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to confuse former President Donald Trump and the 2024 vote after the judge's wife is allegedly “trying to rig the 2020 election.” He said he is seeking to recuse himself from the Colorado lawsuit over his eligibility.

“It's very clear: Clarence Thomas and, rather, his wife, Gini, took part in the event on January 6th. And what may now come before the Supreme Court is that the event in which his wife took part “It's a judgment call as to whether or not his wife is under investigation by the committee on January 6th and qualifies as an insurrection,” Ocasio-Cortez (New York) said Monday. In an interview with Anderson Cooper.

“Clarence Thomas' decision on that, and the court's overall decision on that, is going to directly implicate his wife in any case, so this becomes one of the most classic textbook conflicts of interest. “It would be a scandal, frankly,” she continued, “if he didn't recuse himself.”

A letter from Ocasio-Cortez and seven other House Democrats to the justices last week said Virginia “Ginni” Thomas “attended the January 6 rally. [and] “She planned it and helped bring the insurrectionists to the Capitol,” they claimed.

House Democrats continued, “We cannot believe that we can fairly determine whether an event personally sponsored by my wife constitutes an 'insurrection' that would impede the inauguration of the president.”

The Supreme Court will decide whether President Trump has presidential immunity in the 2020 federal election overturn case being handled by special counsel Jack Smith. House Democrats also urged Clarence Thomas to withdraw from the lawsuit.

The committee sought interviews with Ginny Thomas for months over her alleged involvement in the Jan. 6 breach of the U.S. Capitol.thIn September 2022, she appeared on a panel discussion for almost three hours, asserting throughout the conversation that there was fraud and fraud in the 2020 election.

The commission was divided on the question of whether Ginny Thomas contributed to the attempt to overturn the election results.

On Monday, Ocasio-Cortez claimed that Clarence Thomas established a “precedent” in October 2022 when he withdrew from a lawsuit involving President Trump's former general counsel John Eastman.

Clarence Thomas did not provide an explanation for his resignation, but the New York Democratic Party said in a letter sent to the committee on January 6th:th Revealed correspondence between Ginny Thomas and Eastman.

“I think our hope is that Clarence Thomas has indicated that he intends to recuse himself from the case. This is probably the most directly he will have with respect to any case that comes before the court. That's one of the meanings of this,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “This is not really a partisan point-scoring issue. This is an issue about the integrity of the court,” the lawmaker said. “And for a justice not to recuse himself from a case in which he is so deeply involved will have far greater implications not just for Clarence Thomas but for the entire Supreme Court.”
