“While it is rare for a state to override a medical decision made by a parent by law in other circumstances, it is not only contrary to the parent's decision, but also a violation of the medical judgment of the treating physician and the treatment team of medical professionals. “It goes against my judgment,” he added.

The governor called on the General Assembly to continue working on this measure.

A week after receiving criticism from supporters of the bill for vetoing the bill, DeWine signed an “emergency” executive order banning gender mutilation surgeries for minors, Blaze News said. previously reported.

”[A]I vetoed the replacement House Bill 68, and in my veto message I agreed with the General Assembly that sex reassignment surgery should not be performed on persons under the age of 18, and asked them to draft regulations to prohibit it. I have clearly stated that I have given instructions to institutions under my jurisdiction. Practice in the State of Ohio,” DeWine Executive Order 2024-01D states.

He said his intervention was “necessary” to protect children and families.

”[T]”The Ohio Department of Health has drafted a rule that prohibits gender reassignment surgery on persons under the age of 18 in Ohio hospitals and medical facilities, including outpatient surgical facilities,” the order added.

On Friday, Click denounced government intervention and then accused the governor of enacting an executive order.

“While I support his efforts as a temporary measure, I cannot accept them as a replacement for the SAFE Act. His proposal to take his measure and include it in a bill for signature was contemptible.” he said.
