The first immigrant families living in hotel rooms paid for by the city received eviction notices this week as New York City Mayor Eric Adams seeks to free up beds for recently arrived immigrants.
Approximately 40 families lived at the Row NYC Hotel for up to a year. found According to the Associated Press, Adams had exceeded the 60-day housing limit announced in October. And this is just the beginning, as the Adams administration plans to distribute similar notices across the Big Apple.
Many migrants say they have lost their hotel rooms for months and simply head to other hotels the city has contracted to house migrants. Some told The Associated Press that they had found civilian accommodation.
Maria Quero, 26, from Venezuela, who is more than eight months pregnant, told The Associated Press that she had been in the hotel for five months and didn't know what she would do next.
“I have no idea what's going to happen there,” Cuero exclaimed. “It's very stressful. It gives me a lot of anxiety.”
“Let's hope there's a suitable place. We know people who went to tents during their pregnancies,” added her husband, David Dominguez. He also noted that some migrants had been kept in tents, but he hoped that would not happen to his wife. She said, “Women cannot enter the tent while pregnant.''
Another family told The Associated Press that they have been living rent-free in a hotel for a year and have enough savings to rent their own apartment in New Jersey, but have had to pull their children out of a free school in New York. he said.
Despite the eviction plan, Adams insists she will continue to look for free housing for immigrants.
“This is not going to be a city where you throw kids and families out on the streets and let them sleep on the streets,” Adams said recently. “That's not going to happen.”
Mr. Adams also promised to keep immigrant families within the same school district so that immigrant children attend the same schools for free and do not have to interrupt their schooling by changing schools. Adams did not say how he plans to implement the plan.
However, the eviction policy is under scrutiny by City Comptroller Brad Lander. Mr. Lander has launched an investigation into the policy change to determine whether Mr. Adams adequately explained the issue to undocumented immigrants.
“What information is actually being provided to people? Is there a 60-day eviction procedure?” Lander said in a statement.
The first eviction took place on the same day that a Brooklyn high school closed its doors to students and brought “virtual classes” online as Adams turned a brick-and-mortar facility into housing for immigrants.
Adams announced Tuesday that undocumented immigrants will be moved from the temporary shelter at Floyd Bennett Field to the gymnasium at James Madison High School in Brooklyn's Midwood neighborhood.
Following the Adams administration's order, James Madison High School Principal Jody Cohen warned parents that classes will be held online for the time being.

The principal also informed parents that the school's sports teams and practices have been canceled.
“Due to the possibility of high winds and flooding expected this evening and tomorrow morning, we would like to update you regarding the activation of James Madison High School as a temporary overnight retreat center,” Cohen wrote in a letter posted on the school's website. I am writing information.'' .:
To ensure a smooth transition for families temporarily sheltering in the building overnight, Our school buildings will be closed on Wednesday, January 10th and all students will be learning remotely. Students should plan to log on and attend classes from home. New York State Representative Inna Vernikov slammed the Adams administration's move to hand over schools to illegal aliens.
This is also bad for immigrants. Immigrant children sleep on the floors of gymnasiums and auditoriums and have to wake up at 4:30 a.m. to leave high school. #The end of madness
