Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana) on Thursday introduced a bill that would prohibit liberal states from forcing U.S. citizens from other states to subsidize state programs that extend public health benefits to illegal immigrants. The bill, called the Protect Medicaid Act, would prevent federal funds from being used to administer state Medicaid benefits provided to non-citizens. If a state chooses to extend Medicaid benefits to illegal aliens, the bill would require the state to assume full fiscal responsibility without imposing any burden on taxpayers in other states.

Federal law already prohibits undocumented immigrants from receiving Medicaid, but some states, such as California, have circumvented this restriction by using state funds from the public health care system known as Medi-Cal.
