On Wednesday's WCNY “Capitol Press Room” broadcast, New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) responded to a question about state tax policy by saying: We're worried about losing that high tax base because it pays our police officers, our teachers, our firefighters, and keeps our streets clean. ”
host David Lombardo asked. [relevant exchange begins around 10:10] “Governor Hochul (D) has repeatedly drawn the line on tax increases, which was brought up again in her State of the State report. Deep cuts are being considered and aid from Albany is needed. Is that the right decision, given that it sometimes limits the state’s ability to send money to New York City?”
Adams replied: “If you think about it, we are one of the highest tax states in the nation outside of California, and we need to find the right balance. In New York, 2% of New Yorkers pay 51% of taxes. We're seeing a hemorrhage, not just working-class people, but we're worried about losing that high tax base. Because that tax base pays the salaries of police officers, teachers, and firefighters, and keeps the streets clean. So she needs to understand how to make economic sense without compromising long-term planning and the long-term tax base. We have to find the right balance with Albany's leaders on how we can get the right balance. So I respect her decision to make the right decision for New Yorkers.”
He further added: [are] He will especially talk about raising income taxes for high-income earners. I think this is the part where we will have a thorough discussion in Albany and devise a fair negotiation strategy in order to come up with a plan that everyone can agree to. ”
