According to NFL Network, Mayo was written into his contract to replace Belichick.

Mayo spent his entire career with the Patriots, playing linebacker for New England from 2008 to 2015. He returned to the organization in 2019 as inside linebackers coach.

After 24 years and six championships, Belichick and the Patriots agreed to part ways on Thursday.

Belichick held a relatively short press conference Thursday, spending much of the time thanking players, staff and fans for their contributions during his long tenure.
