Nikki Haley Once Suggested Climate Change to Blame for Mass Immigration

Republican presidential primary candidate Nikki Haley has previously appeared to parrot Democratic talking points that suggest climate change is partly to blame for mass immigration to the United States and other countries.

In January 2017, Haley appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to be confirmed as U.N. ambassador under then-President Donald Trump's administration.

Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) written Ms. Haley asked about so-called “climate refugees.” Democrats argue that mass immigration to the United States and other countries is partly due to global warming destroying crops, the environment, and communities in certain parts of the world.

Markley writes:

We are already seeing the effects of climate change on the ground around the world. 2016 was the hottest year on record (and 15 of the 16 hottest years since 2000). Some countries are already displacing their citizens due to climate change, creating the world's first climate refugees. Extreme drought in the Middle East or even a small rise in sea levels in parts of Asia are likely to displace tens of millions of people. Western countries are being asked to take in some of the displaced people. [Emphasis added]

“Do you agree that the growing number of refugees poses a unique national security threat that requires international solutions? What do you think your role is?'' Mr. Merkley asked.

Haley replied:

If confirmed, I am committed to working with experts from the State Department and the United Nations on issues of climate change and refugee resettlement. The United Nations plays an important role in global refugee management. If confirmed, the role of climate change on refugee flows is an issue I look forward to assessing.Refugee assistance is U.S. policy, and I look forward to being a part of it. [Emphasis added]

In 2019, when Democrats used the “climate refugee” issue to lobby for laxer enforcement of federal immigration laws, researchers at the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) examination Crop production in El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala.

Ultimately, CIS researchers found scant evidence to suggest that climate change is causing mass immigration to the United States.

“In all three Northern Triangle countries, most of the top agricultural products have increased in production in recent years, in some cases tripling or quadrupling in size,” the CIS researchers wrote. . “Given the strong crop yields in Latin America, it is hard to imagine that climate change is a major factor driving migration flows. Even for regions that do, the key explanatory factors appear to have little to do with climate change.”

Also, during Haley's UN confirmation question and answer session, Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) said, “Climate change is just a concept, a hoax created by the Chinese or someone else.'' Do you think so?” he asked.

Haley replied:

No, I don't think climate change is a hoax. If confirmed, I am committed to working with experts at the State Department and elsewhere in the government on this issue to help determine what role the U.S. mission to the United Nations should play. . [Emphasis added]

Haley similarly said in her response to senators that climate change is “real” and “one of the threats” to U.S. national security. These 2017 comments echo Haley's most recent comments to Republican primary voters. last year That she believes in climate change.

“Is climate change real? Yes, it is,” Haley said at the first Republican presidential primary debate in August 2023.
