The park is one of the main transit areas used by cartel-linked human smuggling rings to transport migrants to Texas, where refugees can apply for asylum and avoid deportation. is. While the group was trying to cross, 33-year-old Birtelma de la Sancha and her two sons, ages 10 and 8, were swept away by the current and began drowning. A group of migrants on the Mexican side called 911 to report the drowning. Mexican soldiers, National Guard soldiers and firefighters rushed to the scene and found five people drowning.
Mexican police and soldiers jumped into the Rio Grande to rescue the migrants. However, Wilterma and his two sons had already passed away. Paramedics tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other measures, but were unable to revive him. Authorities were able to rescue two other migrants, identified as Monica de la Sancha Cerros and Victor Antonio Briones de la Sancha.
