PARIS (AP) – Four people were found dead overnight in separate suspected drownings of migrants attempting to cross the dangerous English Channel from northern France, authorities said Sunday.
Another person was rescued in critical condition and is being treated at a hospital in the French coastal town of Boulogne-sur-Mer, French maritime authorities for the Channel and North Sea said.
The drama occurred early Sunday near the coastal village of Vimereux, north of Boulogne, where people appeared to be attempting to board a boat from the coast, the marine prefecture said.
More than 2,500 illegal boat migrants have drowned or gone missing in the Mediterranean this year, according to a United Nations report. https://t.co/TI97MSQLGZ

Immediate details regarding the deaths are not known.
Drownings, sinkings and other sometimes fatal accidents aboard crowded, flimsy vessels are common on migrant routes across the busy waterway separating northern France and Britain.
