JJ McCarthy is “forever a Michigander” but is leaving the Wolverines.
The junior quarterback, who just last week led the University of Michigan to the CFP National Championship, announced Sunday that he has declared for the 2024 NFL Draft.
“I talked to a lot of people inside and outside of football, including my family and coaches.” [Jim] Harbaugh, and many more [whose] I greatly admire and respect that opinion.'' McCarthy I have written In his announcement on social media. “This decision was not easy. This shouldn't happen. I love my teammates, I love my coaches, and I love here in Ann Arbor.”
McCarthy, a likely first-round prospect, completed 72.3 percent of his passes for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns and four interceptions in 15 games for Michigan. The 20-year-old added 202 rushing yards and three rushing scores.
After Michigan defeated Alabama in the CFP semifinals at the Rose Bowl, Harbaugh declared McCarthy “the greatest quarterback in the history of the University of Michigan,” considering only his college performance.
In response, McCarthy told reporters: “Every time I get praised, I get a little uncomfortable.” “That's my personality. I'm really grateful that he's my head coach. Obviously, all the nice things he says about me mean a lot and I'm glad I played for him.” It’s a blessing to be able to do that.”
Former 49ers coach Harbaugh could follow McCarthy, who is scheduled to interview with the Chargers, to the NFL.

Michigan State athletic director Ward Manuel wants to sign Harbaugh to a new contract, but Harbaugh, who led Michigan to a national title, may be ready to return to the pros.
Harbaugh led the 49ers to the Super Bowl 11 years ago, but lost 34-31 to his brother John Ravens.
