A Florida mother and her elementary school-aged daughter escaped serious injuries Saturday night after a tire crashed into their car's windshield in what authorities are calling a “freak accident.”

Clearwater police said the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. on Route 19 in Clearwater when a tire came off a southbound vehicle and bounced over the median just north of Drew Street.

The loose tire smashed through the windshield of a northbound car. According to police, a woman and her young daughter were in the car at the time of the incident.

The mother was driving with her child in the back seat. Police said “fortunately” no one was in the front passenger seat, which sustained significant damage when the tire collided with the vehicle.
