3 killed in Massachusetts plane crash near Leyden identified

A flight school administrator and a student pilot were among the three people killed in a small plane crash over the weekend in a remote, wooded area of ​​Massachusetts, state police said Monday.

Fredricka Ballard, 53, of Southwick, Mass., ran the Fly-Lug Flight School, and William Hampton, 68, of Indian Orchard, Mass., was a flight instructor. Chad Davidson, 29, of Woodstock, Conn., was a student pilot on the plane that crashed Sunday. They were the only occupants.

Fly Lug could not be reached for comment.

The twin-engine Beechcraft Baron 55 crashed near Leyden, Massachusetts, after taking off from Barnes Airport in Westfield at about 11:06 a.m. Sunday. Authorities began searching the Leyden Wildlife Management Area near Greenfield around 11:30 a.m. after multiple dog walkers reported seeing the plane crash.

The incident involved a twin-engine Beechcraft Baron 55 departing from Barnes Airport in Westfield.

All three passengers were found dead on board by Greenfield Fire Department and American Medical Response paramedics.

Federal Aviation Administration aviation inspectors responded to the crash scene Sunday, and National Transportation Safety Board investigators are expected to arrive Monday, state police said.

State police said the accident remains under investigation.
